Sierra Club of Southeast Iowa
A Community Story of Collaboration, Stewardship, and Local Impact
The Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize the Southeast Iowa Sierra Club as our December Member Spotlight. In a community known for its natural beauty and spirit of innovation, this volunteer-powered organization stands out as a driving force behind local environmental progress, hands-on stewardship, and creative solutions that strengthen Fairfield’s future.
Beyond its national reputation, the Southeast Iowa chapter reflects something uniquely homegrown: a group of neighbors who share a deep passion for community, collaboration, and protecting the place we all call home.
A Mission Rooted in Community
The Sierra Club’s local work centers on helping residents understand, appreciate, and protect the environment around them. They believe that a town that cares for its land, water, and shared spaces is a town positioned to thrive. Their mission focuses on making sustainability approachable, practical, and accessible for families, businesses, and volunteers of all ages.
Adapting, Innovating, and Staying Connected
When the pandemic halted community gatherings, the Sierra Club quickly reimagined how they could stay connected. They shifted to virtual programs, organized outdoor movie events, and created opportunities for residents to engage safely. Today, their in-person meetups have returned — warm, welcoming gatherings where people trade ideas, ask questions, and help shape the next chapter of local environmental action.
A Local Leader in Sustainability
Fairfield has long embraced sustainability as part of its identity, and the Sierra Club continues to advance that vision. Several recent initiatives demonstrate how environmental stewardship also supports economic development, community pride, and local collaboration.
Landfill Diversion Project
When the community transitioned to new trash bins, the Sierra Club and local partners helped collect and divert nearly 400 old bins from the landfill. Volunteers coordinated collection, loading, and recycling efforts to ensure the materials were reused instead of discarded.
Plastic Free July
Partnering with local organizations, volunteers created and distributed more than 250 reusable cotton produce bags using donated fabric. The project offered a simple, everyday alternative to single-use plastics.
Sustainable Partying
This new initiative encourages residents to host events without plastic waste. The Sierra Club now lends out sets of real metal flatware — up to 50 pieces — for birthday parties, picnics, and gatherings. Borrowers leave a small refundable deposit and return the cleaned items when finished.

Cultivating a Connection to Place
Sierra Club programs help residents deepen their understanding of the local ecosystem.
Native Plant Garden Club
Meeting monthly at the Fairfield Public Library, this group brings together gardeners who want to explore native plants, share experiences, and learn from each other. Field trips are a regular part of the program, offering hands-on learning in natural settings.
The Deep Time Walk
One of the year’s most memorable events guided participants on a 4.6-kilometer walk through Jefferson County Park — each kilometer representing one billion years of Earth’s history. The experience offered a unique perspective on our planet’s past and humanity’s role in its future.

Strengthening Fairfield Through Collaboration
The Sierra Club’s greatest impact often comes through partnership. They regularly collaborate with city departments, volunteers, and local groups to care for public spaces and advance community goals. Their long-running work with the Fairfield Beautification Commission includes maintaining the Pleasant Plain entrance to town, planting trees, improving trails, and assisting with outdoor beautification projects.
These efforts support community pride, quality of life, and the welcoming environment that makes Fairfield appealing to residents, visitors, and prospective businesses.
How to Get Involved
Whether you’re curious about sustainability, interested in volunteering, or eager to make a difference, the Sierra Club provides opportunities for individuals of all ages and experience levels. Community members are invited to attend meetups, join hands-on projects, borrow flatware, or dive into native plant programs.
