What’s Actually on Your Clothes? How to Keep Laundry Clean and Safe

posted on 4/15/26

We all do laundry, but how often do we stop to think about what’s really left on our clothes after the wash? Even the softest, most “fresh-smelling” fabrics can carry hidden chemicals that affect your skin, your energy, and even your overall wellness.

Most people assume that a clean, freshly scented load is healthy. But here’s the truth: real clean doesn’t need a smell. Those strong scents from detergents and fabric softeners are often just another long list of chemicals listed as 'Fragrance' catch-all, that can cause further irritation to your skin and your respiratory system.

Why Laundry Matters

Your clothes, sheets, and towels are in constant contact with your skin. That means any residue from harsh detergents or softeners isn’t just sitting on the fabric, it’s sitting on you. Over time, this exposure can contribute to:

  • Skin irritation or dryness
  • Allergies or headaches
  • Low-level exposure to chemicals that stress your system

Even if your home smells fresh and your air quality is excellent, your body is still interacting with these hidden irritants all day long.

Simple Ways to Make Laundry Healthier

You don’t need to overhaul your routine overnight. Small swaps can make a big difference:

  1. Switch to Fragrance-Free Detergent
Plant-based, unscented detergents work just as well at cleaning without leaving chemical residues behind.
  2. Skip Fabric Softeners and Dryer Sheets
They coat your clothes with chemicals to make them “soft” and fragrant. Instead, use wool dryer balls or skip the softener entirely.
  3. Wash at the Right Temperature
Follow the fabric care instructions. Overly hot washes don’t always clean better and can break down fibers, increasing exposure to detergent residue.
  4. Rinse Extra if Needed
A second rinse cycle for sheets, pillowcases, or workout clothes ensures that no detergent lingers.
  5. Air Dry When Possible
Sunlight naturally disinfects fabrics and freshens them without chemicals.

Start Small, Feel Big Changes

The goal isn’t perfection. Swap just one scented detergent for a fragrance-free option. Skip the dryer sheets. Pay attention to how your skin feels after laundry day. Over time, your body will thank you, and your home will feel healthier overall.

For me personally, I use Shaklee’s laundry products. They’re plant-based, biodegradable, and have a fragrance-free optoin, so I know my clothes are truly clean without masking anything with artificial scents. It’s a small change that makes a noticeable difference for my skin, my energy, and my peace of mind.

Your Wellness Starts With What Touches You

Every choice counts, from the air you breathe to the clothes you wear. Making intentional, small changes in your laundry routine supports your overall wellness, keeps your skin happy, and keeps your environment genuinely clean.

Here’s to clothes that are clean, safe, and supportive of your health.
