2nd Annual Fairfield Walks Pedestrian Challenge
As part of National Pedestrian Safety Month, the City of Fairfield encourages everyone to experience what it’s like to be a pedestrian. This challenge is not merely about physical activity; it is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the pedestrian perspective. As you walk, take note of various aspects of your environment that may go unnoticed while driving.
To promote this experience, we are excited to bring back the Fairfield Walks Pedestrian Challenge, sponsored by TrafFix Devices Incorporated. We challenge everyone who drives in Fairfield to park their vehicles and walk, ride, or scoot at least one mile that is part of their daily commute. This challenge is open not only to drivers but also encourages those who already walk or bike within the city to join in.
As you embark on your walking journey, we invite you to capture moments along the way. Take a photo during your experience and share it on social media using the hashtags #fairfieldwalks2025 and #safestreetsfairfieldiowa. Thanks to a generous donation from TrafFix, participants have a chance to win $50 in chamber bucks!

WHAT: Fairfield Walks Pedestrian Challenge

WHERE: Public rights-of-way in Fairfield, Iowa
WHY: The average driver in the Midwest spends approximately 45 minutes each day behind the wheel. This routine can lead to a sense of complacency, where we become so accustomed to our driving environment that we overlook the nuances of our surroundings. To foster a deeper awareness and appreciation for pedestrian experiences, we invite you to participate in a unique challenge.
HOW: To enter, post a public picture to Facebook, including #fairfielwalks2025 and #safestreetsfairfieldiowa. The picture needs to document part of your effort to be a pedestrian within the City of Fairfield (not on the trails). The pictures might be of the route you took, a selfie during or after your walk, or something you noticed along your trip.
PRIZES: One winner will be selected at random each Friday (October 17, October 24th, and October 31st). A total of three $50 Chamber Bucks gift certificates will be awarded. Prizes must be picked up at Fairfield City Hall, M-F 8 AM to 4:30 PM (118 South Main) by November 8. Limit 1 per household.
