Why Volunteer With Us?
By joining our kitchen, you're not just preparing meals – you're strengthening our community, one plate at a time. Here's how your contribution makes a difference:
- You'll help create delicious, plant-based meals for all, regardless of their ability to pay.
- Your efforts support our mission to reduce food waste by working with local food systems.
- You'll be part of a welcoming space where community members from all walks of life come together.
We need your help! Our kitchen runs best with 6 volunteers per shift, but often we're operating with just our kitchen director and a few helpers. Whether you can volunteer once a month or make it a weekly habit, your time is invaluable to us. Regular volunteers are especially appreciated as they help us maintain consistent operations.
Ready to make a difference? Sign up HERE and become part of our Stone Soup story!
Can't volunteer? You can still support the cause with your donation. Donate HERE. Donations are tax deductible!

Farm Women as Global Citizens: Post-WWII Authority of the “First Lady of the Farm”
This presentation draws upon the lifework of Ruth Buxton Sayre, known during her lifetime as “First Lady of the Farm.” An Iowa native, Sayre was appointed to President Eisenhower’s agricultural policy committee and served as the president of the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), among many civic roles. This presentation illustrates how Sayre had to redefine the accepted characterization of women on farms not only to fulfill her own pursuits as a writer and speaker, but also to convince farm women that they were not exempt from the responsibility of postwar reconstruction. Sayre’s papers are housed at the State Historical Society of Iowa, in Iowa City. This project features materials included in the archive.
Co-sponsored by Fairfield Public Library and the Carnegie Historical Museum. This program was made possible with support by Humanities Iowa and the State Historical Society Inc for the Humanities.
Free and Open to the Public.

What to Expect as a Volunteer
- Flexible Roles: Whether you prefer cooking, serving, or cleaning, we have a spot for you
- Inclusive Environment: All ability levels are welcome – no prior experience necessary.
- Community Impact: Help provide nutritious meals to those in need while reducing food waste.
- Learning Opportunity: Gain kitchen skills and connect with diverse community members.

Why Plog?
✅ Boost Community Pride – A clean and well-maintained downtown benefits businesses, visitors, and residents alike.
✅ Get Active, Feel Good! – Burn calories while making a visible difference in your own neighborhood.
✅ Protect Our Environment – Keeping litter and harmful chemicals out of our ecosystem means a healthier Fairfield for all.
