Birdy brunch

Summer is a great time to get out in nature! With so many plants and animals out there to see, why not start a nature journal this year? Although drawing is not required for journaling, it is an area that a lot of people wish to include and improve upon.

Join local artist, Kathy Tollenaere at this month’s Birdy Brunch meeting to learn some tips and tricks for creating better nature drawings. We will be making pencil drawings from photo examples and utilizing colored pencils to blend colors.

All experience levels welcome and supplies will be provided!

Join local volunteer Barbara Rainbow for a monthly group exploration of genealogy and local history. Participants are welcome to bring any materials they would like to share or discuss with the group. Mah Jongg is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. Players at FPL play an American variation of the game every week at the library. Stop by and see how the game is played and join the group if you want to learn the game. Teaching instruction for new players will take place in the first 30 minutes each week. The library also offers introductory books for check-out.

JCHC Parkinson's Support Group

The Jefferson County Parkinson’s Support Group is a Community Group that meets once a month with support from JCHC and the Iowa Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA)- “Strength in Optimism. Hope in Progress.” The group meets the first Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. in JCHC Conference Room C. (Use the McCreery Cancer Center entrance.) The purpose of the group is to learn, engage in discussions with others, share experiences, tips, and ideas about living with Parkinson's disease or being a care partner, provide mutual support, and foster a sense of community. We will have loaner rods and tackle available at the gazebo near Shelter #3 Pond on Friday, June 5 from 9 am-3 pm and Saturday, June 6 from 9 am-3 pm. No registration required! Children and first-time anglers encouraged!

Iowa’s free fishing weekend is on June 5, 6, and 7. Iowa residents may fish without a license or trout fee; all other regulations remain in place.

Nestling Camp

4 & 5 years old (One year of preschool required)

Registration opens May 1 at 6:00am

Experience nature in a hands-on way this summer as your youngster explores our natural world! Camp features nature exploration, hiking, games, crafts, and other hands-on activities for youth who are 4 and 5 years old. Included in the camp fee of $40 are snack and t-shirt. Please only sign your child up for one time slot. Duplicate registrations will not be refunded. Camp will have a limited number of participants.

Please note:
• You may only sign your child up for one camp to give more participants the opportunity to attend.
• We ask that adults do not attend camp as it allows participants to better explore and try new things.
• Camps are set up for students who will be entering the listed grade during the summer. For Nestling Camp, we ask that participants have had one year of preschool or homeschool equivalent.

Cancellation Policy
All Jefferson County Conservation events have a registration deadline of two weeks prior to the program start date. If you would like to cancel before the two-week window, you will be issued a credit which can be used for future programs. Within two weeks of the program, no credits will be given. Mah Jongg is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. Players at FPL play an American variation of the game every week at the library. Stop by and see how the game is played and join the group if you want to learn the game. Teaching instruction for new players will take place in the first 30 minutes each week. The library also offers introductory books for check-out.

Turn your child into a Nature Olympian! Join in as participants compete in the 2026 Summer Nature Olympics. Competitions will include archery, fire starting, casting competitions, knot tying, nature knowledge, and more! The Summer Nature Olympics program is for youth entering 4th-6th grade. This will be a joint camp for Jefferson and Van Buren County residents. Top five participants from each county will be invited to represent their respective Conservation Board in a three-county competition held at Jefferson County Park on Friday, June 19.This program has a $25 registration fee and will have a limited number of participants.

We need your help! Our kitchen runs best with 6 volunteers per shift, but often we're operating with just our kitchen director and a few helpers. Splish, Splash! Campers will learn about different bodies of water, their role in the environment, and some of the animals that are specific to each. Camp features nature exploration, hiking, games, and field trips!  Included in the $60 camp fee are snacks and t-shirt. Camp will have limited participants.

Please note:
• You may only sign your child up for one camp to give more participants the opportunity to attend.
• We ask that adults do not attend camp as it allows participants to better explore and try new things.
• Camps are set up for students who will be entering the listed grade during the summer.

Cancellation Policy
All Jefferson County Conservation events have a registration deadline of two weeks prior to the program start date. If you would like to cancel before the two-week window, you will be issued a full refund. Within two weeks of the program, no refunds will be given. Caregiver Support Group

The Jefferson County Caregiver Support Group is a community-based group that meets once a month with support from Jefferson County Health Center. It provides a welcoming, supportive space where caregivers can connect with others, share experiences, and feel understood as they navigate the challenges of caring for a loved one.

Whether you’re new to caregiving or have been in this role for years, this group offers encouragement, connection, and a reminder that you’re not alone.

Kayak Loan Jefferson County Park

Want to kayak, but aren’t ready to purchase all of the equipment? Come try it out with us first!

The pond at Jefferson County Park is a great place to try kayaking for the first time. We will provide kayaks, paddles, and life jackets and have a safety kayak on the water. No experience or registration required!

Seats are limited, and time on the water will vary depending on the number of participants.

Shhh! We're Writing

Date & Time:  Fridays 2:00-2:30 writing 2:30 optional share time
Location: Fairfield Public Library Conference Room
Audience: Ages 8 and up

Aspiring writers ages 8 and up can come to the library for a quiet work session in the library conference room. Writers are provided a writing prompt or they can work on their own writing projects. The last 15 minutes writers can share if they so choose.

Kayak Loan Pleasent Lake

Pleasant Lake is a great recreation body of water located just north of Fairfield! It provides opportunity for fishing, small engine boating, and kayaking. For this event, we will provide kayaks, paddles, and life jackets and have a safety kayak on the water. No registration required!

Seats are limited, and time on the water will vary depending on the number of participants.

Our Market at a Glance

First organized in 1975, we have become SE Iowa’s most well known farmer’s market. Customers are always pleased, and vendors can’t wait to bring their goods to such a vibrant community of buyers.

The market is intended to provide an opportunity for individuals to sell approved items, which are produced or manufactured by them in their garden, farm or home. Vendors may sell only those products that are approved items and that are grown or made by them.

We are organized as a 501c3 non-profit and manged by a Market Advisory Board. We have expanded to accept vendors from all surounded counties, plus three more counties.

Barnyard Buddies

Fishing Camp

Entering 3rd-4th Grade
Pre-registration Required
Registration opens May 1 at 6:00am

Campers will learn to rig their own pole, bait their hook, take their catch off the line, and identify fish as we fish around Jefferson County! Included in the $60 camp fee are snacks and t-shirt. Camp will have limited participants. Campers do not need to bring their own fishing equipment.

Please note:
• You may only sign your child up for one camp to give more participants the opportunity to attend.
• We ask that adults do not attend camp as it allows participants to better explore and try new things.
• Camps are set up for students who will be entering the listed grade during the summer.

Cancellation Policy
All Jefferson County Conservation events have a registration deadline of two weeks prior to the program start date. If you would like to cancel before the two-week window, you will be issued a full refund. Within two weeks of the program, no refunds will be given. Shut Up and Write is a chance for writers to sit quietly together and work on their writing projects. 

All writers and all experience levels are welcome, and dont worry, no one will see what you've written. This hour is about getting your writing done.

WHAT TO EXPECT

3:30 PM: Quick intros
3:45 PM-4:45 PM: Write for 1 hr.
4:45 PM-5:00 PM: Clean up and Farewells (until next Tuesday!)

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING?

Bring your paper, pens, or laptop (whatever helps you write best). Headphones are optional but recommended.
