Mah Jongg is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. Players at FPL play an American variation of the game every week at the library. Stop by and see how the game is played and join the group if you want to learn the game. Teaching instruction for new players will take place in the first 30 minutes each week. The library also offers introductory books for check-out.

JCHC Parkinson's Support Group

The Jefferson County Parkinson’s Support Group is a Community Group that meets once a month with support from JCHC and the Iowa Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA)- “Strength in Optimism. Hope in Progress.” The group meets the first Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. in JCHC Conference Room C. (Use the McCreery Cancer Center entrance.) The purpose of the group is to learn, engage in discussions with others, share experiences, tips, and ideas about living with Parkinson's disease or being a care partner, provide mutual support, and foster a sense of community. Raising Readers, runs for five weeks on Thursday nights starting March 5th - April 2nd.  The make-up date for weather cancellations is Thursday April 9th. This program is for both adults and children, with lots of fun, hands-on activities that strengthen early literacy skills. Fairfield Kiwanis is sponsoring supper each week following the activities.

Jump-Start is designed for 4th–7th graders who are ready to learn the basics of sports performance training in a structured, high-energy environment.

This is about building confidence, discipline, and a solid understanding of how to train.

All new athletes must complete a 60-minute Start-Up Session prior to joining the class. This includes baseline testing and a movement screen.

Grief Support Group

The Jefferson County Grief and Loss support Group is a community group that meets once a month with support from JCHC. A guided grief group for anyone navigating the challenges of grief.

The purpose of this group is to establish ongoing emotional and educational support for individuals within Jefferson County. We aim to foster a compassionate environment that encourages emotional expression, connection and coping skills for those navigating grief.

Wanderer's Haul game club is kicking off in 2026! Game club will meet twice weekly at the Haul. Stop in for play days as often as you would like. Members can learn new games, share games they love, and help build a schedule of games based on their favorites and new releases coming out in 2026.

Raising Readers with ISU Extension and Outreach

Raising Readers, runs for five weeks on Thursday nights starting March 5th - April 2nd.  The make-up date for weather cancellations is Thursday April 9th. This program is for both adults and children, with lots of fun, hands-on activities that strengthen early literacy skills. Fairfield Kiwanis is sponsoring supper each week following the activities.

Fly Tie Friday

This month we will be tying the Bluegill Slayer 9000. This is  a great fly when fishing warm water for Bluegill, Crappie, or Largemouth Bass. Once you learn to tie one, you’ll want to tie all kinds of variations to ensure you have just the right color combination.

During this class, we will discuss the history of the fly, tie a few, and discuss how to fish this fly and what species it is effective for. Cost is $15, registration is required, and seats are limited.

The Wege Center for the Arts at Maharishi International University presents Liber Floridus with Amanda Curreri and Andy Ness. Featuring woven and textile-based works by Curreri and multimedia works on paper by Ness, the exhibition presents a compendium of the artists’ visual lexicons that include symbols, imagery and pattern rich with personal significance.

The exhibition draws inspiration from the Liber Floridus or “Book of Flowers,” a medieval encyclopedia created in Northern France between the 11th and 12th centuries with contents that span geography, mathematics, natural history, astronomy and countless other subjects. Known to be one of the earliest encyclopedias, its marriage of detailed illustrations and text intertwined spiritual knowledge with that of the natural world.

In Liber Floridus at the Wege Gallery, the two artists blend content with materiality demonstrating a shared wonder within their processes and evolving subject matter. As an old book might fall open to a repeatedly visited passage, Ness and Curreri revisit specific imagery—references to human and animal bodies, folklore, architecture—while churning it through their own idiosyncratic artistic approaches in the studio. The artists’ processes and materials take on further significance within the context of Liber Floridus as one considers the historical implications within the work.

Andy Ness’ works vibrate with ethereal energy, glowing with metallic leaf, and grounded by recognizable imagery amongst colorful washes and textures. To achieve the widest range of opacity and transparency in his drawings, Ness mixes pigments and binders, incorporating walnut ink for its fugitive traits. As one of the primary inks used by medieval manuscript illuminators, its qualities become philosophically resonant as it shifts and oxidizes over time, paralleling the medieval sense of knowledge as always partial, always subject to revision. Just as encyclopedias are living documents rather than fixed authorities, so, too are Ness’ works, in a state of constantly arriving, finding voice from what came before.

Amanda Curreri incorporates storytelling, social justice histories and folklore into her textile works. Regarding weaving as a social technology, Curreri uses it to learn from history, layering collaged imagery and techniques, as she shifts between floor looms, table-top looms, and the digital Jacquard loom. The Jacquard loom, invented in the early 19th century, uses punch cards to encode pattern, linking it as a direct ancestor of binary computing and digital logic. Curreri’s digital Jacquard loom sits at a peculiar historical crossroads, connecting backward to medieval tapestry as encyclopedic storytelling, and forward to the logic of databases and digital archives. The loom itself becomes a kind of compendium machine, as Curreri’s work occupies the whole timeline simultaneously.

The Jefferson County Health Center Diabetes Community Group is a welcoming and supportive space for individuals living with diabetes, as well as their families and caregivers. This group offers a chance to connect with others who understand the day-to-day challenges of managing diabetes, while learning helpful tips, sharing experiences, and receiving guidance from healthcare professionals. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or have been managing diabetes for years, this group is here to empower you with knowledge, encouragement, and community.

Join FPL Librarians Joy Craig and Sara Martindale , community volunteers, and local crafters for a weekly crafting and textiles program! Instructions and materials will be provided for projects selected by staff—but participants are welcome to bring whatever personal project they are currently working on as well!  Happy crafting!

Caregiver Support Group

The Jefferson County Caregiver Support Group is a community-based group that meets once a month with support from Jefferson County Health Center. It provides a welcoming, supportive space where caregivers can connect with others, share experiences, and feel understood as they navigate the challenges of caring for a loved one.

Whether you’re new to caregiving or have been in this role for years, this group offers encouragement, connection, and a reminder that you’re not alone.

Join the Native Plant Garden Club for a lively discussion inspired by the work of Dr. Doug Tallamy, professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware and co-founder of Homegrown National Park, whose research highlights the critical role of native plants in restoring biodiversity. Participants will share their experiences transforming lawns and gardens into thriving habitats that support pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Exhibiting flowers & Vegetables at the Fair Workshop

o Join us to learn about exhibiting flowers and vegetables! We will be talking about exhibiting locally and at the state fair for all ages!

o The workshop is Saturday, April 18 from 1-3 PM at the Jefferson County Extension Office. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning and take home resources and free seeds. 5 Lesson Course Introduction to Watercolor

Taste of Walton

The 7th annual Taste of Walton. This is the clubs largest fundraiser of the year. Entry cost $25 per person, $10 kids 12 and under. JCHC Ottumwa Clinic Open House

Ottumwa, we’re getting closer. 
The plans for JCHC Clinic | Ottumwa have been in the works, and the opening is now in sight. We’re excited to share that our new clinic will officially open on April 20, 2026.

This location will offer full-service primary care for patients of all ages, bringing trusted, patient-centered care closer to home.

Mah Jongg is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. Players at FPL play an American variation of the game every week at the library. Stop by and see how the game is played and join the group if you want to learn the game. Join DJ every other Sunday for this epic high fantasy D&D campaign.

Old stones up in the mountains hold the stories; a king becoming sick with greed; with wanting of more and more wealth, and a dwarven civilization of gold and diamond. To have such plentiful gold that it was as valuable as timber or stone in its day. Gold was a building material while currency was polished wood mined from tree roots. Something long ago forced the dwarves to abandon Al’Khaz, the city of gold. Its location, all its wealth, and all of its technology, all lost to time. Some say it was stolen away by the sea, some claim it was lifted into the sky to live among the clouds, others theorize that it left for a different plane entirely.As the humble and fabled people of Aegravalon struggles to defend Tregaidaran from the forces of Dourlaran and their terrible plans of land development, our heroes are faced with evidence that maybe Al’Khaz could be found. Financial Integrators offers a collaborative approach to financial planning, helping individuals, families, and businesses coordinate all aspects of their financial life. Their Fairfield office is home to a team of experienced professionals who work together to provide guidance, strategy, and personalized service to their clients.

The local advisory team includes Bo Northup, Senior Financial Advisor, Heather Rathbun, Financial Advisor, and Stacey Martin, CFP®, who work with clients to plan for their long-term financial goals and navigate important financial decisions. Supporting the advisors is a dedicated team focused on client service and relationship building to ensure every client receives thoughtful, attentive care.

Shut Up and Write is a chance for writers to sit quietly together and work on their writing projects. 

All writers and all experience levels are welcome, and dont worry, no one will see what you've written. This hour is about getting your writing done.

WHAT TO EXPECT

3:30 PM: Quick intros
3:45 PM-4:45 PM: Write for 1 hr.
4:45 PM-5:00 PM: Clean up and Farewells (until next Tuesday!)

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING?

Bring your paper, pens, or laptop (whatever helps you write best). Headphones are optional but recommended.

Mah Jongg

Mah Jongg

Date & Time: Every Wednesday from 1-4pm 

Location: Fairfield Public Library Meeting Room

Audience: Adults

Mah Jongg is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. Players at FPL play an American variation of the game every week at the library. Stop by and see how the game is played and join the group if you want to learn the game. Teaching instruction for new players will take place in the first 30 minutes each week. The library also offers introductory books for check-out.

Volunteer Shifts

• Wednesdays: 1-3:30PM
• Thursdays: 5-9PM
• Fridays: 5-9PM
• Saturdays: 5-9PM

Anyone over 14 is welcome to volunteer on their own, 10-13 year olds will need a parent present

• Flexible Roles: Whether you prefer cooking, serving, or cleaning, we have a spot for you

Adult Craft and Connect

Join FPL Librarians Joy Craig and Sara Martindale , community volunteers, and local crafters for a weekly crafting and textiles program! Instructions and materials will be provided for projects selected by staff—but participants are welcome to bring whatever personal project they are currently working on as well!  Happy crafting!

Wanderer's Haul game club is kicking off in 2026! Game club will meet twice weekly at the Haul. Stop in for play days as often as you would like. Members can learn new games, share games they love, and help build a schedule of games based on their favorites and new releases coming out in 2026.
