Camp Dodge: Home Away from Home 1917-1918
Following the U.S. entry into World War I the War Department undertook the task of raising, training, equipping and arming a force large enough to successfully contribute the Allied war effort. Camp Dodge, Iowa, was selected as one of 16 training camps for draftee soldiers. The small Iowa National Guard camp was expanded into the largest military base in Iowa’s history. the upper Midwest.
With a presentation by Iowa native John Vogt, viewers will learn how, from September 1917 through November 1918, 37,111 Iowa draftees left cities, towns and farms to become soldiers during the First World War. Period images, maps, letters, and data will detail how many of many of these Iowans left home for the first time. For these Iowans and other inductees from the upper Midwest, Camp Dodge became their new “Home Away from Home.”
This event is co-sponsored by the Carnegie Historical Museum and Fairfield Public Library.

The Elks National Foundation is the charitable arm of the Elks, responsible for all our community giving.
From the Grand Lodge, they aim to raise approximately $5 per member for ENF. Fairfield has historically given close to $10 per member, primarily driven by individual contributions and our breakfast event.
When we give, we get back! For every dollar donated to ENF, we receive about $1.80 in return.
This money goes towards supporting various initiatives, including scholarships for kids, tree planting, funding dictionaries, the Scouts, Shop with a Hero, and assisting our veterans both locally and abroad.
Please join us in supporting the ENF through our breakfast event on February 15th, 7-11am tickets are $12 per person.

1:00 pm · 4:00 pm
Mah Jongg is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. Players at FPL play an American variation of the game every week at the library. Stop by and see how the game is played and join the group if you want to learn the game. Teaching instruction for new players will take place the first Friday of each month. The library also offers introductory books for check-out.
If you need special assistance to join this program due to a disability, please contact the FPL Front Desk at 641-451-6551 Ext. 1 or circ@fairfield.lib.ia.us.
