JCHC Hosts Heart Health & Home Cooking Demo in Celebration of American Heart Month
FAIRFIELD, IA — In honor of American Heart Month, Jefferson County Health Center (JCHC) will present a Heart Health & Home Cooking Demo. Sponsored by the JCHC Auxiliary, this event will be free to all participants on Thursday, February 22nd at Jefferson County Health Center in Conference Room C. The goal of the evening will be to educate participants on the importance of heart health, placing a special emphasis on the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Diet.
The event will feature a live cooking demonstration led by Colette Banda, Registered Dietitian, highlighting a heart-healthy recipe and practical tips to modify favorite recipes. Colette emphasizes, “The DASH Diet is a powerful tool in preventing and managing hypertension. It is about making simple, sustainable changes to your diet, and this event will provide insights into incorporating these changes into your daily life.”
Participants will have the opportunity to taste complimentary samples to discover how delicious heart-healthy eating can be. With the support of Hy-Vee and Pickle Creek Herbs, each participant will be taking home a variety of no salt spices and vinegar samples to help them in their healthy cooking journey. Additionally, Sherri Brumbaugh, Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse will be on hand for free blood pressure checks and to answer clinical questions.
Taking place during American Heart Month, the Heart Health & Home Cooking Demo is a testament to JCHC’s commitment to raising awareness and promoting heart health within our community. The JCHC Auxiliary’s sponsorship plays a crucial role in making this event possible.
Presenter, Colette Banda, expresses her enthusiasm, saying, “I am excited to share valuable insights on heart-healthy living and demonstrate how simple changes in our cooking habits can contribute to overall well-being. Let’s make heart health a priority this February!”

5:00 pm · 7:00 pm In honor of American Heart Month, Jefferson County Health Center (JCHC) will present a Heart Health & Home Cooking Demo. It is about making simple, sustainable changes to your diet, and this event will provide insights into incorporating these changes into your daily life.” Participants will have the opportunity to taste complimentary samples to discover how delicious heart-healthy eating can be. With the support of Hy-Vee, each participant will be taking home a variety of no salt spices to help them in their healthy cooking journey. Let’s make heart health a priority this February!” Limited spots are available, and attendees should reserve their spot by contacting Ryan Ford, Cardio Pulmonary & Support Service Director, at 641-469-4275. Yet in her late 40s, she and her husband decided to leave the big city and move to his family farm in Iowa, all for the dream of becoming a farmer, to put into practice everything she had learned over decades of reporting on food and agriculture. There was just one problem: money. The economics of agriculture are shocking: half of Americas two million farms made less than $300 in 2019. Between rising land costs, ever-more expensive equipment, and the growing uncertainty of the climate, farming today is a risky business. For many, simply staying afloat is a constant struggle. Even for those with a decent nest egg and access to land, like Beth and John had, making ends meet at times seems impossible. Beth's book Bet the Farm is a first-hand account of the perils of farming today and a personal exploration of more just and sustainable ways of producing food. Bet the Farm: The Dollars and Sense of Growing Food in America Free copies of the book are available at the Fairfield Public Library while supplies last!
