Since their auspicious debut at the 2017 Durango Ragtime and Early Jazz Festival, the Holland-Coots Jazz Quintet has amazed the jazz and ragtime world with their energy, musicality, and humor. As a group, they work together as brothers – each a wonderful soloist and an absolute marvel as a team player, ready to be lyrical or hot, bluesy, rampaging, or sentimental. The HCJQ recorded their first CD in July 2017, a tribute to the great Thomas “Fats” Waller called This Is So Nice It Must Be Illegal, which was met with radiant reviews.
“Their expression of musical creativity, lyrical, warm, sometimes hilarious, celebrates the joyous merrymaker, but it is more an outpouring of devotion for Fats and what he did so open-heartedly … the band made magic happen, song after song.” –Michael Steinman, Jazz Lives
“The spirit of Waller’s music is captured by these cats, but they put their own stamp on it. Each of the players is a first-rate exponent of playing classic jazz.” –Joseph Lang, Jersey Jazz

About the Fairfield Cultural Alliance:
In 2005, the Fairfield Cultural Alliance helped create a state-designated Cultural District in Fairfield. In 2019, the FCA successfully secured re-designation for Fairfield Cultural and Entertainment District from the state of Iowa, published the 2019 edition of the Heritage Tour booklet, and organized the second World Fair Field International Festival in September.
Despite the challenges posed in 2020, 2021, and 2022, the FCA continued their mission by producing a revised edition of the Heritage Tour booklet and distributing Cultural Trust Fund Mini-Grants. Collaborations with the Fairfield Volunteer Center and the Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department aimed to keep our city parks free from litter, while an ongoing Community Survey assesses how the FCA can further enhance its services to the community.
We invite you to join us in celebrating the renaissance of arts and culture in Fairfield and look forward to your enthusiastic participation.
The Fairfield Cultural Alliance (FCA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering and promoting arts, culture, history, and creative expression in Fairfield, Iowa. The FCA plays a pivotal role in preserving and enriching the cultural heritage of our vibrant community. Bigger Is Not Better: Rural Communities in the Wake of Livestock Consolidation
November 9, 2023
7:00 pm · 8:30 pm
ART CULLEN Pulitzer Prize-Winning Editor of The Storm Lake Times DR. CHRIS JONES Author of The Swine Republic Retired Water Quality Research Engineer with the University of Iowa CHRIS PETERSEN Independent Hog Farmer and Past President, Iowa Farmers Union SONJA TROM EAYRS Family Farmer, Attorney, Rural Advocate Bigger is Not Better brings together a compelling panel of experts, farmers, and neighbors to take a hard look at how livestock consolidation over the past 50 years has affected rural communities. Speaker presentations kick off the meeting, but the majority of Bigger Is Not Better will be an opportunity for attendees to ask our panelists questions. • A 38+ year journalism veteran, ART CULLEN will share an insider’s view of livestock consolidation’s impact in both his home town of Storm Lake and throughout Iowa. • DR. CHRIS JONES will link the growth of factory farming, its accompanying monocropping system, and Iowa’s legislative inadequacy to Iowa’s degraded water quality. • Independent hog farmer CHRIS PETERSEN will talk about how consolidation has influenced his family farm and how the social structure of rural Iowa has changed. • Minnesota family farmer and rural advocate SONJA TROM EAYRS will share how 12 CAFOs built over the last 30 years affected her farm, family, and rural community. Bring your questions! We’ll devote a majority of the meeting addressing audience questions. Learn more about the meeting here. ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS ART CULLEN is the editor and co-owner of The Storm Lake Times, a family owned, independent newspaper in northwest Iowa that he co-founded in 1990. He won a Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing in 2017 after writing a series of 10 editorials exposing and challenging the dark money that funded counties sued by the Des Moines Water Works in 2015 for polluting its water. He’s the author of Storm Lake: A Chronicle of Change, Resilience, and Hope from a Heartland Newspaper. DR. CHRIS JONES is a retired Research Engineer formerly at the IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering at the University of Iowa. He managed the Iowa Water Quality Information System that provided real time reporting of nitrate levels in 66 state locations. Dr. Jones’ University of Iowa blog became the basis of his popular book, The Swine Republic. His new blog can be found on Substack. CHRIS PETERSEN is a lifelong independent and traditional family farmer in Clear Lake, Iowa raising antibiotic-free Berkshire hogs on a humane, small-scale farm. He manages a herd of 50 sows, sells piglets to other small-scale Berkshire farmers, and raises others to finishing weight that he sells through direct marketing. A co-founder of the Iowa Alliance for Responsible Agriculture and various state and national groups, Petersen is a fierce advocate for family farmers. SONJA TROM EAYRS is a farmer’s daughter, rural advocate and attorney. Her family has been on the front lines fighting industrial agriculture for 30 years. Encircled by 12 hog CAFOs within a 3-mile radius of the Trom family farm, Eayrs and her family know and understand firsthand the damage sustained to rural America by large multinational corporations. Eayrs, her family members, and other local citizens founded Dodge County Concerned Citizens, a grassroots organization determined to fight corporate factory farms. 7:00 pm
Fairfield Area Community Theatre presents Larissa FastHorse’s “The Thanksgiving Play” as a dessert show. Tickets are $20. They will be available at Adela’s and at the door.
A brief synopsis of the show:
In this satirical comedy, a group of thespians armed with (questionably) good intentions and progressive lingo, aim to devise a culturally sensitive play about the first Thanksgiving for local elementary schools.
What could go wrong?
Watch as Jaxton, Logan, Braden, and Alicia attempt to navigate through the minefields of cultural sensitivity and the collaborative creative process.
ADVISORY: The Thanksgiving Play is suitable for adults and teenage audiences. This show contains mature themes and mild adult language about America’s sometimes troubling history. It also contains some questionable Thanksgiving reenactments.

THE POET'S FORGE Date & Time: Every second Saturday from 3-4:30pm
Location: FPL Meeting Room
Audience: Adults
Host: Craig Deininger
The Poet's Forge is a workshop that emphasizes craft—hence "forge" and its connotations with smithing—the actual work we do within and upon the substance of language. This emphasis does not omit the many subtler elements vital to poetry like inspiration, imagination, meaning and so on. Rather it simply holds the techniques of the craft as its primary focus. The workshop is geared to those who are serious about developing their skill in composing poetry and not toward merely having a platform for voicing opinions or having one's work affirmed. That said, the atmosphere will be professional and respectful, attending precisely to the poetry of the participants. Anyone interested in writing more poetically, regardless of experience, is quite welcome provide they are prepared to honor what their poetry has to say as its own autonomous entity, so to speak. Auxiliary content on poetry and poetics will be included, but will not be prepared in advance. Rather, we will let the poetry that is on the table before us at any given moment determine our direction. About Craig Deininger Craig is Assistant Professor of Creative Writing & Literature at Maharishi International University. Before moving to Fairfield, Craig taught at Naropa University, Lees-McRae College, Studio Film School in Los Angeles, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he earned an MFA in Creative Writing, served as an editor for the Juniper Prize for Poetry, and was Coordinator of the MFA’s Visiting Writers Series. He also earned an MA and PhD in Mythology and Jungian Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in California. His poetry has been published in several literary journals, anthologies, and newspapers, including The Iowa Review, Glyphs, Between, Moab Happenings, and Riverbend. He is a regularly featured writer for the Joseph Campbell Foundation, and his first book of poetry, Leaves from the World Tree, was recently published by Mandorla Books.

2023 Holiday Lighting Ceremony on Friday, November 24th
See the town square come to life! The Annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony will be held on Friday, November 24th, 2023 at Central Park in Fairfield. To kick off the illumination and subsequently the holiday season, the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce organizes this festive tradition with the lights being turned on at 6:00pm.
Special thanks to our 2023 Holiday Lighting Ceremony Presenting Sponsor, Everybody's Whole Foods!!
The Fairfield High School Choir will set the mood by singing Holiday music at 5:30pm. The Chamber Christmas Committee chooses one citizen, whom best exemplifies the holiday spirit, and presents them with the opportunity to throw the switch to turn on the lights for the season. This citizen will be announced at 5:55pm so the lights can be turned on at 6:00pm sharp. After arriving to town as the lights come on, Santa can be found in the Santa House listening to the children share their hopes for the holiday season. There will also be horse drawn wagon rides around the square for the kids. Free hot cocoa and cookies will be handed out at the Santa House. An evening not to be missed!
