IOWA ART QUILTERS & FIBER ARTISTS EXHIBIT OPENING
The Fairfield Art Association announces the opening of a new exhibit featuring the art of "Iowa Art Quilters & Fiber Artists". The colorful display will open on Friday September 1, in the Main Gallery at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. The hours will be from 6:00-8:30 PM. This is also the final night to Bid on a downtown art installation piece from "If the Shoe Fits" and Vote for Your Favorite one - both taking place in the Main Gallery.
There are 10 artists from across the state, with 30 different quilt and fiber entries, many are available for purchase. Artists include Barb Stewart, Jean Taft, Sue Kluber, Carol Trumbull, Rebecca Loew, Barbara Riggs, Kathryn Roe, Karin Grimes, Susan McIntyre, and Wendy Read.
According to Fairfield fiber member Wendy Read "The Iowa Art Quilters began meeting in 2005 in Grinnell, Iowa, to encourage and support one another in making art quilts, or art made of fabric.
By 2021, many members of our group had expanded their use of fibers to include art that could no longer be categorized as an art quilt, and our name was expanded to include all fiber artists.
The simple definition of “a quilt that you hang on a wall” no longer addresses the complexities of some of the art quilts, or their artistic originality, which is lacking in the beautiful traditional quilts that have kept us warm for many generations. Our members currently include artists that work with felted wool, as well as fiber sculptures.
Our group includes approximately 20 members from around the state, and includes professional artists, as well as amateurs just learning and exploring the many techniques and tools available to make great art.
Our monthly meetings include time to teach, learn, and play with new materials and techniques. The group is open to anyone interested in fiber arts, from beginners to advanced; all are welcome. Our emphasis is to learn from one another with a spirit of helpfulness, as we share techniques and discoveries.

We’re headquartered in Davenport, Iowa, and have distribution hubs and donor centers in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin. In your area, ImpactLife is the exclusive provider to Jefferson County Health Center.

• Spacing beds apart to continue social distancing
• Wiping down beds after each use
• Encouraging donors to allow space in the refreshment area
In addition, donors who want to limit time at the drive can complete the EarlyQ prior to coming to the drive; we scan the barcode emailed to them and they move directly to the vital station, then to donation. Feel free to share the link with your donors: www.bloodcenter.org/earlyq
Potential donors must be at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission form available through www.bloodcenter.org) and weigh more than 110 pounds. A photo I.D. is required to donate. THE POET'S FORGE Date & Time: Every second Saturday from 3-4:30pm
Location: FPL Meeting Room
Audience: Adults
Host: Craig Deininger
The Poet's Forge is a workshop that emphasizes craft—hence "forge" and its connotations with smithing—the actual work we do within and upon the substance of language. This emphasis does not omit the many subtler elements vital to poetry like inspiration, imagination, meaning and so on. Rather it simply holds the techniques of the craft as its primary focus. The workshop is geared to those who are serious about developing their skill in composing poetry and not toward merely having a platform for voicing opinions or having one's work affirmed. That said, the atmosphere will be professional and respectful, attending precisely to the poetry of the participants. Anyone interested in writing more poetically, regardless of experience, is quite welcome provide they are prepared to honor what their poetry has to say as its own autonomous entity, so to speak. Auxiliary content on poetry and poetics will be included, but will not be prepared in advance. Rather, we will let the poetry that is on the table before us at any given moment determine our direction. About Craig Deininger Craig is Assistant Professor of Creative Writing & Literature at Maharishi International University. Before moving to Fairfield, Craig taught at Naropa University, Lees-McRae College, Studio Film School in Los Angeles, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he earned an MFA in Creative Writing, served as an editor for the Juniper Prize for Poetry, and was Coordinator of the MFA’s Visiting Writers Series. He also earned an MA and PhD in Mythology and Jungian Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in California. His poetry has been published in several literary journals, anthologies, and newspapers, including The Iowa Review, Glyphs, Between, Moab Happenings, and Riverbend. He is a regularly featured writer for the Joseph Campbell Foundation, and his first book of poetry, Leaves from the World Tree, was recently published by Mandorla Books.

This event is aimed at helping all Pre-K through 12th grade teachers stock their classrooms with the supplies they need for the year ahead. An often quoted statistic is that teachers spend between $400 and $600 per year out of their own paycheck for classroom supplies. Let’s all come together and help eliminate the need for these dedicated professionals to pay to work at their job! Sign up today to host a booth and offer supplies and various other items to the teachers. We’ll supply you with a wish list of needed items. We would also like to help promote connections and relationships being made between the teachers and businesses within the community that night. The teachers are also interested in learning how you can help throughout the year in their classrooms. Do you have someone who would make a great guest speaker on a specific topic? SHARE that information with the teachers. They are always open to gaining new resources! For teachers new to our area, please also bring information sheets about your business events and service organizations that have any events that might interest teachers and their families throughout the year.

JCHC Foundation Unveils Exciting Changes for Annual Golf Tournament: Join the Fun at the Divot Classic
FAIRFIELD, IA — The Jefferson County Health Center (JCHC) Foundation is delighted to once again host the JCHC Foundation Golf Tournament. The 18-hole golf scramble has been renamed as the Divot Classic. As the name portrays, the event promises to be a day filled with camaraderie, friendly competition, and unforgettable moments on the course. The Divot Classic will be held on Friday, September 15th at the Fairfield Golf & Country Club. Join in this exhilarating tournament for golf, fun, and to make a meaningful impact on local healthcare. Exciting New Activities Await Golfers One of the most exciting updates to this year’s Divot Classic is the addition of on-course activities that promise to enhance the experience for all participants. Here’s a sneak peek at what you can expect. Dice Roll: As expected golfers can pay to bypass play and score a hole-in-one. This option, available on the back nine, will be coupled with a new version of the dice roll offered on the front nine of play. Golfers can roll the die to determine a yardage advantage for their personal tee shot. String it Out: New to this year’s event, “String it Out” lets participants purchase string by the foot for just $1/foot. Use it strategically to replace a putt or move your ball from a hazard to the fairway. String is available in 10’, 20’ or 50’ lengths, allowing teams to tailor their strategy to the challenges presented on the course. Friendly Competition for All: The Divot Classic is a 4-person scramble format, ensuring that golfers of all skill levels can enjoy the day together. Each player tees off to begin each hole, and then the team collaborates to move all team balls to the best position and continues in this manner until the hole is complete. Make a Difference in Local Healthcare: By participating in the Divot Classic, you’re not just enjoying a day on the green, you are contributing to the betterment of local healthcare. Proceeds from the event go towards investments to sustain and improve our community’s healthcare services. Don’t miss out on this exciting golfing experience that combines fun, competition, and community. Reserve your team’s spot by calling 641-469-4198 or emailing avetter@jeffersoncountyhealthcenter.org. Join author Bill Witherspoon for live readings from his newest book, Enter Space. Enter Space is a collection of 27 short stories and 108 photographs of the high Oregon desert collected in five books, each one a distinct theme—awakenings, longings, flights, gifts, and invocations—that provide the context for the alchemical quality the vast landscape has on the perception and observations of the solitary desert dweller. The readings will be accompanied by live music by Andrew Murray.

For the past several years high numbers of migrating monarchs have been found at Zillman’s Hickory Hills. Join us for a fun evening of catching, tagging and releasing monarch butterflies as they begin their annual migration. Monarch butterflies cannot survive our cold Iowa winters, instead they travel up to 3,000 miles south to forests high in the mountains of Mexico. Monarchs will stop to nectar along the way which is to our advantage. Not only do they help to pollinate our plants, but it also gives us the opportunity to see them. We will be assisting with monarch research by catching the butterflies, placing a small tag on their wing, recording their information and releasing them to continue on their long journey. These tags help researchers to learn about the migration of the monarch.
Zillman’s Hickory Hills is located at 2437 Glasgow Rd. Pre-registration is not required. Nets and tags will be provided but please wear long pants and closed toed shoes.

Re-Visioning Our Dying: Practical Steps, Proven Possibilities

1:30 pm · 3:30 pm
Fairfield Cares, with the sponsorship of the Fairfield Public Library, is offering a free informational 3-part series on the subjects of death and dying called “RE-VISIONING OUR DYING: Practical Steps, Proven Possibilities”.
September 23rd – Part 1: What Are the Levels of Care, Who Pays?
The first presentation in the series, “What Are the Levels of Care”, will be led by Jennifer Hamilton, a respected senior health care and hospice veteran from the Fairfield community. Many are not familiar with the actual options and lack of options that are available as we age and need more care. What are Independent Living, Home Care, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Skilled Nursing Care, and Hospice? When does one qualify? Who pays for what?
September 30th – Part 2: Be Prepared: End of Life Finances and Legalities
“Be Prepared: End of Life Finances and Legalities”, the second talk, led by Fairfield Attorney Shane Zisman, will discuss the important aspects of finances, insurance, deeds, wills, trusts, and powers of attorney that will enable attendees to decide essential questions and give directive powers to those they trust. The benefits to family members and loved ones are enormous; if these matters are decided before any serious mental or physical impairment occurs, harmony can prevail and conflicts avoided.
October 7th – Part 3: Five Wishes: Letting Others Know Exactly How You Want to Be Treated
The final presentation, “Five Wishes: Letting Others Know Exactly How You Want to Be Treated”, will also led by Jennifer Hamilton, who has assisted many people in thinking about and creating their final directives. The first living will addresses your personal, emotional, medical and spiritual needs and lets you say exactly how your wish to be treated if you get seriously ill. The presentation will also introduce the American Bar Association’s “Commission on the Legal Problems of the Elderly”, a well-regarded and easy to use document that leads experts in formalizing end-of-life care.

violinist Alicia Svigals and celebrated silent film pianist Donald Sosin!
Set in the Vienna-like city of Utopia, H. K. Breslauer’s 1924 The City Without Jews (Die Stadt ohne Juden) follows the political and personal consequences of an anti-Semitic law to expel the city’s Jews. When things start to decline, the National Assembly must decide whether to invite the Jews back. The film’s stinging critique of Nazism is part of the reason it was no longer screened in public after 1933. Masterfully restored by Filmarchiv Austria.

Art Domestique, the gallery on the square in Washington, Iowa, is hosting an exhibit of the work of Suzan Bates Kessel. The exhibit is ongoing through October 30, with a "Meet & Greet" with the artist on September 29 from 5:30-7:30 PM. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday - Friday from 10 AM - 4:00 PM, and on Saturdays 10AM - 3PM.
The title of the show is "Reflections", which the artist states is due to multiple reasons; my art reflects my life, where I live, travel and what I love to do. It also reflects thoughts of my early active art period with exhibits and recognition, then a self-inflicted break for numerous years (25+) on volunteer projects, and now again in pursuit of creating art. The desire in an artist never goes away, but percolates inside. This exhibit has a few pieces representing my past medias, from batik, collage, mixed media, and watercolor resist, to more recent "easy to do on vacation" oil pastel and colored pencil, and most recently painted acrylic canvases.
Suzan Kessel was awarded a "Cultural Legacy Award" in 2015, for actively supporting art in the Fairfield Community, as long term Fairfield Art Association Volunteer Director, and Co-Founder of the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. In her "previous art life", Suzan exhibited and sold her art in San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Des Moines Art Center, Galleries throughout Iowa, and participated in Midwest art fairs receiving awards. The Iowa Arts Council commissioned a large batik for art in public building program, and she has art at the University Hospital and other private and public collections.

Author Reading and Live Music
Join author Bill Witherspoon for live readings from his newest book, Enter Space. Enter Space is a collection of 27 short stories and 108 photographs of the high Oregon desert collected in five books, each one a distinct theme—awakenings, longings, flights, gifts, and invocations—that provide the context for the alchemical quality the vast landscape has on the perception and observations of the solitary desert dweller. The readings will be accompanied by live music by Andrew Murray.

A tour of distinctive homes in Fairfield, Iowa
Fairfield homes having aesthetic and historical significance will be open for public viewing on Saturday, September 30th from 10am to 4pm. Tourists can visit the homes in any order and ask questions of the current owners. These homes are rarely open and have never all been open on the same day.
The Rodham Bonnifield House 1838, Waterworks Road
It is oldest home in Fairfield and the oldest two story log cabin in Fairfield. Originally built 8 miles east of before Iowa was a state. It was Mrs. Bonnifield that who suggested the town name of Fairfield. By the early 1900s, the cabin was deteriorated. It was saved, moved to its current location and restored. From B Street, go east on Waterworks Road to the first log cabin on the right.
James A. Beck House, 1896, 401 East Burlington Avenue
This Queen Anne house was built with plans by George Barber, an architect who marketed house plans via catalogs. Barber’s enchanting designs combined with his willingness to customize his plans for a modest fee led to the sale of 20,000 plans in the late 19th and early 20th century. Owned by restoration enthusiasts Richard and Kendra Lint, they are bringing the house back to its full glory.
James F. Clarke House, 1916, 500 South Main Street
This home was designed by the prominent Prairie Style architect F. Barry Byrne, who worked with Frank Lloyd Wright. This home is one of the most architecturally distinctive in the Midwest. Byrne engaged the artisan Alfonso Iannelli to design the furniture, carpeting, light fixtures, and wall stenciling. The house is currently owned by Sam and Jessica Garchik. Parking is available on 2nd Street.
The FarmHouse at Hickory Highlands, 2329 Kale Blvd.
The house crafted nearly completely by the owner-builders to look and feel as though it emerged from the earth in which it nestles. It was built of locally sourced materials including straw bale walls, earthen plaster, adobe floors, whole tree framing, a garden roof, and solar electric. Susan’s garden is looking good. From AmericInn, go west one mile to Kale Blvd, then south 7/10th mile to driveway on the left, proceed to the end.
Tim and Debbie Freeberg Renwick cottage, 1105 W. Fillmore Ave
Designed and built with reclaimed materials by the owners in 2000, this 572 square foot house has implemented many space saving features inspired by Scandinavian rural architecture, houseboats, and gypsy wagons. It has a cat friendly spacious interior with a small footprint. In 2019, it was moved to its current location at 1105 W Fillmore Ave and workspaces were added. From Main St, turn west on Fillmore Ave and after you pass 7th St, keep to the right. When you get to the ‘NO OUTLET’ sign, follow the red balloons by the gravel lane down to their home.

If you need disability-related accommodations in order to participate in this event, please contact the library at 641-472-6551 Ext. 1.
