First Friday's Art Walk is coming up and you know we love a reason to celebrate here at Willow & Bright! Well, this month we couldn't decide between a Mother's Day theme or Cinco De Mayo... so we decided to do BOTH!!! We're excited to announce our first Mama's & Margaritas event on Friday May 5th from 4-8pm!!!
What can you expect? First off, there will be FREE gifts with your purchase of $75 or $125, so come ready to shop! And while you browse our new styles, you can sip on a refreshing margarita - on us!
As usual, we'll also have a special guest in store: Local mama Tonya Kisling, owner of Raising 4 on 6 Homestead, will be setting up and selling her all-natural home and body products that she personally makes from scratch. We can't wait to shop her goodies!
This month, because we know that Mother's Day isn't always a festive time for all, we'll also be donating a portion of profits from the event to the March of Dimes, to aide in the support of parents throughout their pregnancies, help to end preventable maternal health risks and death, end preterm birth and close the health equity gap for every family.
So bring your friends, bring your mom, and join us for a fun-filled night of shopping and sipping. We can't wait to see you there!

Ballet Des Moines Presents "SHE"

7:30 pm · 9:30 pm
Ballet Des Moines’ revolutionary performance of “SHE” exemplifies the powerful voices of female representation through the works of three diverse and internationally-recognized choreographers. SHE seeks to promote inclusion and belonging while engaging participants in meaningful dialogue about why representation matters in a vibrant community.
SHE was created with all audiences in mind, recognizing that diversity should be celebrated in all forms. Attendees can expect an immersive experience with each delicate movement complemented by stunning costumes and spectacular lighting design. The choreography is designed so that viewers from any background can appreciate the beauty and technicality of classic ballet while enjoying the uplifting message of unity and hope.
SHE is presented via partnership with Ballet Des Moines in solidarity with the Odesa National Ballet in Ukraine, who were forced to cancel their North American Tour. The Odesa National Ballet would have performed Swan Lake at Fairfield Arts & Convention Center on April 6, 2023. We are grateful to Ballet Des Moines for stepping in with this groundbreaking performance, and we are humbled by the generous spirit of the international arts community. A portion of the proceeds of this event will be donated to the Ukrainian Emergency Art Fund.
It is an honor to present SHE as a symbol of solidarity with our Ukrainian artist brothers and sisters. We hope that people young and old will feel inspired by these dancers and know that their own voices are powerful, too. We can all speak up against injustice.

Chaplin’s best-loved and most influential film turns 102 this year, but its special blend of slapstick and sentiment still lands today. Organist Jay Warren accompanies with the original score to bring you, as the opening title card states, “a picture with a smile—and perhaps, a tear.”
ABOUT JAY WARREN
Chicago’s foremost photoplay organist, Mr. Warren brings all the color, excitement, and glamour of the silent film era back to life with his original scores for the silver screen. As a regularly featured photoplay organist for the Silent Film Society of Chicago, he has accompanied most of the great silent films throughout his forty year career in his famous rousing style. He has been featured annually for the highly regarded Silent Summer Film Festival since its inception in 2000. Jay has appeared 14 times playing the huge E.M. Skinner pipe organ for silent films at the University of Chicago’s famed Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. He also performs film accompaniment on the beautiful Letourneau pipe organ in the Crimi Auditorium of Aurora University. Jay has also made several silent film photoplay appearances on the incredible 5 manual Wurlitzer located at the Sanfilippo Foundation’s Place de la Musique in Barrington, Illinois.
The Barhydt Organ Spotlight Series features master organists and pianists that show our beautiful Barhydt Organ and Steinway grand piano at their finest. Admission to all performances is free! Voluntary donations will be accepted at the door ($10 suggested).

THE POET'S FORGE Date & Time: Every second Saturday from 3-4:30pm
Location: FPL Meeting Room
Audience: Adults
Host: Craig Deininger
The Poet's Forge is a workshop that emphasizes craft—hence "forge" and its connotations with smithing—the actual work we do within and upon the substance of language. This emphasis does not omit the many subtler elements vital to poetry like inspiration, imagination, meaning and so on. Rather it simply holds the techniques of the craft as its primary focus. The workshop is geared to those who are serious about developing their skill in composing poetry and not toward merely having a platform for voicing opinions or having one's work affirmed. That said, the atmosphere will be professional and respectful, attending precisely to the poetry of the participants. Anyone interested in writing more poetically, regardless of experience, is quite welcome provide they are prepared to honor what their poetry has to say as its own autonomous entity, so to speak. Auxiliary content on poetry and poetics will be included, but will not be prepared in advance. Rather, we will let the poetry that is on the table before us at any given moment determine our direction. About Craig Deininger Craig is Assistant Professor of Creative Writing & Literature at Maharishi International University. Before moving to Fairfield, Craig taught at Naropa University, Lees-McRae College, Studio Film School in Los Angeles, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he earned an MFA in Creative Writing, served as an editor for the Juniper Prize for Poetry, and was Coordinator of the MFA’s Visiting Writers Series. He also earned an MA and PhD in Mythology and Jungian Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in California. His poetry has been published in several literary journals, anthologies, and newspapers, including The Iowa Review, Glyphs, Between, Moab Happenings, and Riverbend. He is a regularly featured writer for the Joseph Campbell Foundation, and his first book of poetry, Leaves from the World Tree, was recently published by Mandorla Books.

Celebrate motherhood
Mother's Day is not a federal holiday but it's a day to celebrate motherhood and show appreciation for mothers, including (great-)grandmothers, stepmothers, foster mothers and other mother figures. The history goes way back: the modern holiday was first celebrated in 1908. Anna Marie Jarvis was the founder of this holiday in the United States.

Copies of The Swine Republic will be available for purchase
at a $5 discount.
Environmental champion Dr. Chris Jones is coming to Fairfield to premiere his new book -- The Swine Republic: Struggles with the Truth About Agriculture and Water Quality -- and to talk with us about water quality (or the lack thereof) here in Iowa.
In his work at the University of Iowa's Hydrology Lab, Jones has for years studied our state's "nutrient problem" and identified commonsense reforms in our agricultural system that would begin to reverse the downstream transport of nitrates, phosphates, and topsoil that end up creating the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Many of you will remember his stirring presentation at our annual meeting last year at Lake Darling.
Now, under pressure from certain legislators, Chris is stepping down from his academic role and stepping up in his advocacy with his new book. We salute his candor and courage, and welcome him back to Fairfield.
We hope you can join us!

Phoenix Rising Presents "Mostly True" an Adult Storytelling Evening Series
Hosted by Barbara Foley and Brad Fregger.
Mostly True, Adult Storytelling Series:
Monthly: Every 3rd Friday
Cost: Suggested donation is $10, but everyone is welcome.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story."
— Mark Twain
- Where:
Phoenix Rising Cathedral
Upstairs in the Large brick building at the corner of 3rd and Burlington.
- When:
Third friday of the month going forward.
- Doors Open: 7:00 pm - Storytelling: 7:15-9:30
- Suggested Donation $10, but everyone is welcome.
There will be six stories each evening. The stories are personal stories, remembrances from the past. The stories chosen will be those that fit the theme for the evening (funny, inspirational, embarrassing, etc.). The theme for the next month will be announced at the event.
Note: What we mean by "mostly true" and "remembrances" is that the story will be how you remembered it to be, probably "Mostly True." As Mark Twain said, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." He didn't mean lie or even exaggerate, what he meant was, tell the story as you remember it, don't spend a lot of time and energy trying to find out what actually happened.
The objective of the series is to get to know you. The more we get to know each other, the more we trust and respect each other. This happens in spite of differences in beliefs or opinions; we can disagree and still be friends.
If you would like to be a storyteller at future events, please send a summary to Brad at 512-657-8780 (text) or bradfregger@gmail.com.
Brad and Barbara will choose six stories from the received summaries and notify all the submitters of the final choices.
Brad and Barbara took part in adult storytelling when they lived in Austin, Texas and found it to be entertaining, enlightening, and successful. They are looking forward to replicating that experience here in Fairfield.

Positive Intelligence Mental Fitness - Zoom Overview
Fairfield, IAMay 23, 2023
8:00 pm
Who Needs Mental Fitness?
In a word, all of us. Nutrition, rest, exercise, and our mindset are the pillars of physical health, and they are also important for mental health. But there is more to the story.
Join me for an overview of Positive Intelligence Mental Fitness next Tuesday, May 23 at 8 PM
While we hear a lot about nutrition, exercise, and rest, the concept that mental fitness can be trained in a similar way to physical fitness is less well-known. It is fascinating to me that we can actually train our brains to serve us far better with a deceptively simple neuroscience-based process developed by Shirzad Chamine who did the factor analysis research while teaching at Stanford.
I personally started to learn and use this process last July. It as been a game-changer for my personal effectiveness. I was sufficiently impressed that I became certified to facilitate the program initially for my own sales organization. Very soon the word got out and other friends and colleagues became interested, so I opened my facilitations to anyone interested in being more effective, successful, and happy in life. Our own Chamber Director happened to be one of them. Here's what she had to say about her experience.

Naturally 7 is more than a tightly orchestrated collection of great a capella singers. They transform their voices into actual human instruments, effortlessly producing music of any genre. Their vocal choreography is so perfectly interwoven that they compelled the musical maestro himself, Quincy Jones, to declare that “Naturally 7 is the future of vocal music!!” Their sonic mastery was on full display in a series of unforgettable performances on “The World’s Best” TV show, which premiered on CBS immediately following Super Bowl LIII. Hosted by comedian and “Carpool Karaoke” collaborator, James Corden, Naturally 7 reigned supreme as the world’s “Best Group,” and cemented their singular status among the planet’s musical elite.
This was only icing on the cake of a still-vibrant 20-year career, which includes 3 world tours — nearly 500 shows — with the incomparable Michael Bublé and global phenomenon Coldplay. In addition, Naturally 7 has shared the stage with numerous icons, including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Sarah Connor, Lionel Richie, Ludacris, The Roots, and more. Counted among their world-famous fans are President Barack Obama, Will.I.Am., Ellen DeGeneres, Craig Ferguson, Bill and Melinda Gates, Jay Leno, Allan Titchmarsh, Mo’Nique, Jools Holland, and Arsenio Hall, along with countless others.
It’s exactly what you would expect. When something is pure magic, it’s destined to withstand the test of time. Naturally.
