In the 1970s, Greg Laurie and a sea of young people descend on sunny Southern California to redefine truth through all means of liberation. Inadvertently, Laurie meets a charismatic street preacher and a pastor who open the doors to a church to a stream of wandering youth. What unfolds is a counterculture movement that becomes the greatest spiritual awakening in American history.

Cancelled
We regret to announce that Odesa National Ballet of Ukraine has been forced to cancel their highly anticipated performance of Swan Lake at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center this spring. However, we are excited to relay that Ballet Des Moines will be stepping in to replace the canceled performance with a revolutionary production entitled “SHE.”
The cancellation of Swan Lake by the Ukrainian Odesa National Ballet was made necessary by the Russian conflict in the country and the crises it has caused at all levels of society. In an act of solidarity, Ballet Des Moines will offer an alternative production, to be performed at Fairfield Arts & Convention Center on Friday, May 5th. A portion of the proceeds of this new event will go toward supporting the Ukrainian Emergency Art Fund.
If you are a ticket holder for the original Swan Lake performance, please look for communication via email and snail mail regarding this change. If you have not been contacted by February 15th, please reach out to boxoffice@fairfieldacc.com or call (641) 472-ARTS.
Ballet Des Moines’ revolutionary performance of “SHE” exemplifies the powerful voices of female representation through the works of three diverse and internationally-recognized choreographers. SHE seeks to promote inclusion and belonging while engaging participants in meaningful dialogue about why representation matters in a vibrant community.
SHE was created with all audiences in mind, recognizing that diversity should be celebrated in all forms. Attendees can expect an immersive experience with each delicate movement complemented by stunning costumes and spectacular lighting design. The choreography is designed so that viewers from any background can appreciate the beauty and technicality of classic ballet while enjoying the uplifting message of unity and hope.
SHE is presented via partnership with Ballet Des Moines in solidarity with the Odesa National Ballet in Ukraine. We are grateful to Ballet Des Moines for stepping in with this groundbreaking performance, and we are humbled by the generous spirit of the international arts community. A portion of the proceeds of this new event will be donated to the Ukrainian Emergency Art Fund.
It is an honor to present SHE as a symbol of solidarity with our Ukrainian artist brothers and sisters. We hope that people young and old will feel inspired by these dancers and know that their own voices are powerful, too. We can all speak up against injustice.
_____________________________________________________________
*Out of an abundance of caution and care, ticket sales for Odesa National Ballet are currently paused as we allow for fluctuations in the artists’ situation. We ask that you join us in remaining patient as our friends in Ukraine navigate shifting circumstances with grace and agility. If you have already purchased your tickets for Odesa National Ballet, please don’t fret! We have confidence that we will be able to host the performance as planned, and only wish to remain sensitive to the situation overseas at this time. If there are any changes, we will communicate them to you clearly and promptly.*
The Odesa National Opera and Ballet Theater of Ukraine presents “Swan Lake,” the timeless story of romance, magic, and tragedy. A prince falls in love with an enchanted princess, cursed by a wicked sorcerer to take the form of a swan. As the lovers attempt to break the spell and find their happily ever after, the sorcerer thwarts them with a cruel trick and the two are separated, only to unite in death.
A beautiful romance and soaring tragedy in four acts, “Swan Lake” is one of the most popular and famous ballets in the world.

THE POET'S FORGE Date & Time: Every second Saturday from 3-4:30pm
Location: FPL Meeting Room
Audience: Adults
Host: Craig Deininger
The Poet's Forge is a workshop that emphasizes craft—hence "forge" and its connotations with smithing—the actual work we do within and upon the substance of language. This emphasis does not omit the many subtler elements vital to poetry like inspiration, imagination, meaning and so on. Rather it simply holds the techniques of the craft as its primary focus. The workshop is geared to those who are serious about developing their skill in composing poetry and not toward merely having a platform for voicing opinions or having one's work affirmed. That said, the atmosphere will be professional and respectful, attending precisely to the poetry of the participants. Anyone interested in writing more poetically, regardless of experience, is quite welcome provide they are prepared to honor what their poetry has to say as its own autonomous entity, so to speak. Auxiliary content on poetry and poetics will be included, but will not be prepared in advance. Rather, we will let the poetry that is on the table before us at any given moment determine our direction. About Craig Deininger Craig is Assistant Professor of Creative Writing & Literature at Maharishi International University. Before moving to Fairfield, Craig taught at Naropa University, Lees-McRae College, Studio Film School in Los Angeles, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he earned an MFA in Creative Writing, served as an editor for the Juniper Prize for Poetry, and was Coordinator of the MFA’s Visiting Writers Series. He also earned an MA and PhD in Mythology and Jungian Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in California. His poetry has been published in several literary journals, anthologies, and newspapers, including The Iowa Review, Glyphs, Between, Moab Happenings, and Riverbend. He is a regularly featured writer for the Joseph Campbell Foundation, and his first book of poetry, Leaves from the World Tree, was recently published by Mandorla Books.

In the 1970s, Greg Laurie and a sea of young people descend on sunny Southern California to redefine truth through all means of liberation. Inadvertently, Laurie meets a charismatic street preacher and a pastor who open the doors to a church to a stream of wandering youth. The Farm Bill and Factory Farms: Could the Farm Bill Be Encouraging CAFO Growth Near You?
Tuesday, April 18 at 7:00 pm via Zoom
With
Joe Maxwell, Co-founder and President, Farm Action
Aaron Lehman, President, Iowa Farmers Union
The $1.4 trillion 2023 Farm Bill is now making its way through Congress. It’s a perfect time to learn more about how factory farms thrive under current government programs and how we can advocate for a fairer 2023 Farm Bill supporting small-scale farmers.
Farm Bill policy experts Joe Maxwell, President and Co-founder of Farm Action, and Aaron Lehman, President
of the Iowa Farmers Union, will explore how the Farm Bill benefits CAFOs and explain the negotiations currently underway to shift the balance of funding to benefit traditional, independent farms.
Maxwell and Lehman will cover:
- A brief overview of the Farm Bill and how it historically built support for CAFOs and industrial agriculture
- Specific programs that boost and prop up CAFOs
- How funding allocations can change to drive more support to small-scale traditional farms
- Ways the Farm Bill impacts Iowans with stories of how family farmers are affected
- Specific Iowa programs that could benefit traditional Iowa farmers and local food systems
- How the climate-smart/IRA funding will affect the Farm Bill and its impact on Iowa – including greenwashing harmful practices such as biodigesters and carbon pipelines and incorporating environmentally-beneficial practices that would make a difference
- The current state of Congressional negotiations
- How Farm Action, Iowa Farmers Union, and National Farmers Union are advocating for a fairer and more just 2023 Farm Bill
- What to be on alert for and steps we can take to take to advocate for a fairer and more just 2023 Farm Bill
Maxwell and Lehman will begin with short presentations with Maxwell speaking from a national perspective and Lehman covering how the Farm Bill impacts Iowa. A vibrant discussion between the two follows to provide a greater understanding of Farm Bill issues moderated by JFAN Executive Director Diane Rosenberg.
The final third of the program will be devoted to questions and answers from our audience. Questions can either be submitted ahead of time by emailing director@jfaniowa.org or posed during the webinar.
About Our Speakers
Joe Maxwell is co-founder and president of Farm Action and a former Executive Director for the Organization of Competitive Markets. He’s held key positions in political and initiative petition campaigns and served for 14 years in the Missouri State Legislator first as a state legislator and then as Lt. Governor. He and his brother are Missouri family farmers.
Aaron Lehman has led the Iowa Farmers Union as president since 2016 and previously served as IFU vice president, executive director and legislative director. He’s a fifth-generation family farmer from rural Polk County raising corn, soybeans, oats and hay in both organic and conventional rotations. He served on the National Farmers Union policy committee and is currently on the Advisory Board of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture.
The webinar is free. Pre-register here. https://bit.ly/3M9mzRH

Southeast Iowa Sierra Club is Hosting:
Inflation Reduction Act Funding Clinic (IRA)
9:30 to 3:30 on Friday, April 28, 2023 (lunch included)
Jefferson County Fairgrounds (2606 W Burlington Ave, Fairfield, IA 52556)
The Inflation Reduction Act has appropriated $500 billion to boost economic development and community resilience and has designated 40% of its benefit for underserved rural communities. Participants from Wapello, Jefferson, Washington, Davis, Van Buren, Louisa, Henry, Lee, and Des Moines counties are specifically invited, because we think this is a “leg-up” that Southeast Iowa needs. Of course, attendance is open to individuals from elsewhere, too.
MORNING PROGRAM: Experts from multiple Federal, State, regional agencies and organizations will provide information about the amount and type of IRA funds that will flow through each department, how their organization will be involved, and what types of projects each can support. Those present will include DOT, EPA, USDA, FEMA, IRS, IEC, Blue-Green Alliance, Iowa Solar Trade Association, Center for Rural Affairs, and more.
AFTERNOON PROGRAM: Those same representatives, as well as grant writers, will staff “round tables” where participants can ask questions about specific projects and learn how best to proceed and who to contact to access funds.
Pre-registration is required at http://bit.ly/3JLScz9?r=qr. Clinic fee is $35 if paid in advance online; $40 (cash or check) at the door.
